How To Replace A Shower Pan
Replacing a shower pan requires more than removing the visible base. The drain connection, waterproof layer, wall junctions, floor support, and shower system layout must work together. Incorrect installation can cause leakage, unstable flooring, mold, and costly repairs.
Remove And Inspect The Existing Pan
Shut off the water supply and remove the shower screen, trim, drain cover, and lower wall finish. Disconnect the drain before lifting or cutting out the old pan. Inspect the subfloor, wall framing, and waste pipe for moisture damage, corrosion, cracks, or movement. Damaged support materials must be repaired before installation continues.
Prepare The Drainage And Waterproofing
Measure the opening, drain position, threshold height, and finished wall thickness. The 2024 International Plumbing Code requires shower liners to slope toward the drain at 2 percent. It also requires a waterproofing test using at least 51 mm of water retained for no less than 15 minutes without visible leakage. Local regulations may require longer testing periods.
Set the New Shower pan on a level and fully supported base. Connect the waste outlet with the specified seal, then secure the perimeter flange behind the waterproof wall system. Do not drill through the waterproof zone below the permitted fixing height.
Complete Installation And Testing
Before restoring the wall finish, check:
Drain alignment and discharge speed
Pan stability under distributed weight
Waterproof joints around the outlet and walls
Uniform slope without standing water
Compatibility with the Shower Mixer and screen
EN 14527 defines cleanability, durability, testing, and conformity requirements for domestic shower trays, including products used in hotels and student accommodation. Plastic shower bases for North American markets may also be evaluated under CSA B45.5 and IAPMO Z124.
